Distributed by BVM Props Review by "Rockin' Rick" Part 5 Now would be a good time to get a mounting bracket installed for the regulator. I use the heavy duty regulators manufactured by Fromeco for ignitions and receivers. I made the mount from a piece of light ply and glued it with epoxy it to the landing gear formers. Install the switch and charge jack for the smoke pump battery. I used a MPI switch for the ignition with the battery indicator and charge jack built in. Fit your Fuel and Smoke inlets on the opposite side of the fuse, or wherever convenient for you. Mount the smoke and fuel tanks and plumbing for these items. Place a piece of foam between the tanks and the deck to help prevent foaming. Be sure to secure all tubing connections with tie wraps and loop the vent line around the rear top side of the tanks to prevent siphoning. I've been putting off this step throughout this build because I knew it was gonna' be a bitchin' job from the git'go. Xtreme Composite's designers, in their infinite wisdom, short cut this aircraft by not building the wings with servo hatch doors. Look at the wing panel in the top left pix. Can you believe it? A couple of pictures in the supplied manual show this deficiency. This means that you're going to have to fish the servos and leads into the mounts from the inside of the wings. I used a piece of string to pull in the servos and leads and made a long hex driver using a piece of 1/2" copper pipe as an extension to perform this trick. A hex driver made by "Bondhus" with the pro hold head was employed to drive the screws. This particular hex driver held the screws very well. If you are using Hitec HS 5955TG servos as I did, be forewarned that you must trim the inside edges of the servo mounting brackets in order to get the servos to fit. Here, I used a small fine rasp to open up the servo mounting brackets. It's going to take you a while to get the servos mounted, so pick a time that you have plenty of patience. I used screws to mount the servos that are socket head and have the washer built into the head. By the time you get to the last servo, you ought to be getting pretty good at this installation, or very frustrated with the guy who designed the wings in this manner. Buck up and drink a beer. I've got the servos installed now and opened up the pack of servo extension arms and aileron control horns supplied by the manufacturer. This time I test fitted the supplied clevises and they fit worse than the ones for the elevators. The holes in the servo extension arms and Aileron control horns are bored out way to large to work with the supplied clevises or the after market clevises from Composite ARF. If you choose to use the supplied components, you're on your way to slop city. This was very disappointing. I put the supplied stuff in file 13 and made my own Aileron control horns from stock aircraft aluminum and used Nelson aluminum 1 1/2" servo extension arms. These horns and arms will not twist under pressure when ball links are employed as the fiber arms and horns are prone to do. Carbon Fiber pushrods with 4-40 ends were inserted into Nelson 1/4" ball links for a very secure and rock solid control of the Aileron surfaces. Another chore you're going to have to do, is to enlarge the width of the slots for the servo extension arms in the wings. The slots are not properly aligned with the servo mounts and didn't provide enough width to work with the supplied arms or the aftermarket arms that I decided to use. Hitec HS 5955TG servos were used for the ailerons on both wings. Don't skimp on your servos, you'll thank yourself later when the aircraft performs as you're expecting it to. The inboard aileron control horn should be fitted to align with the hinge point and height of hole for the push rod should be the same as the inboard aileron servo extension arm. The outboard aileron control horn should be fitted to align with the hinge point and height of hole for the push rod should be 3mm above the height of servo extension arm top hole. This will provide proper linearity through out the travel of the ailerons due to the taper of the wing.
