Build Review by "Rockin' Rick"

Part 1

HI there! For the Aeroworks 100CC YAK's I decided to try Smart-Fly's Power Expander 14mz, Turbo Regulator, and the Heavy Duty Regulator for the engine ignition.  I've been using Dura Lite's Power Boxes and their batteries on my other planes, but I think that Duralite has now become complacent with their pricing and place in the RC market.  I also changed over to Fromeco Peerless batteries for this plane and saved myself $60.00 over the comparable Duralite models. Duralite needs to lower prices soon, or competition is going to whittle away their market share.

Purchasing a comparable system from Smart-Fly seemed to be in order this time as I saved  $80.00 over the comparable Power Box 40/24 system from Duralite/PowerBox Systems. Agreed, the Smart-Fly 14MZ Power expander may have been a little more than what was necessary to control this particular aircraft, but I had the Futaba R5014DPS receiver already in waiting since it was bundled with a new Futaba 12MZ transmitter I purchased last summer.

I really liked the fact that all of these components are planned for and can be equipped with Deans connectors and heavy duty wiring to handle high current applications. No cheesy lightweight stuff here at all. Positive, sure connections really give me peace of mind when flying this aircraft.  There was plenty of room in the YAK's receiver bay to install all the devices including the batteries. A pair of Fromeco 4800 mah L-Ion  batteries were used on the receiver side to ensure more than adequate power to the system.

On the right, the deck for the ignition components is shown. Again, a Fromeco L-Ion Peerless battery was employed to power the ignition. We saved $24.00 by purchasing the Fromeco Battery over the comparable Duralite for the ignition.  I don't know about you, but I like saving a buck or two when building.  The YAK now has many, many flights on it now and has performed flawlessly using the Smart-Fly components.  I now like Smart-Fly's systems so well, that I'm going to employ them again when I build the Dietrich Performance 42% Extra 260 this spring. I'm going to use the new Smart-Fly Power Expander 14MZ and Turbo Regulator combination again for that plane.  Stay Tuned, more to come.

Recommendation:  The Smart-Fly Power Expander system is every bit as good, reliable, and functional as Duralite's Power Box Systems. Remember, the Duralite is only programmable on five channels if you buy the "all the bells and whistles" model for the super big bucks.  The Futaba 12Z, 14MZ, and  JR's 12X are perfect for the 14MZ power expander as you can program your servo's straight from the transmitter.    You make the call, I'm sticking with Smart-Fly.
