Pilot 100CC YAK Fast Build CF Version
Build Review by Rockin' Rick Part 5 The rudder cables have been connected to the rudder control horns so lets cross them in the fuse and make the connections at the rudder servo arms. There are two crimps provide for each cable and I'll crimp the closest to the servo arm first. Then I'll crimp the furthest away with a loop back through it for extra measure. Notice in the third picture that one of the ball links is on top of the servo arm and one is located below it. I mount them in this fashion to eliminate any touching of the cables when they by-pass each other in the fuse. I'll install the motor box cover using #4 x 1/2" pan head screws since we are finished in this area. Wheels and wheel pants are next on the list. Mount the axel and put some blue locktite on the threads Don't over tighten because this is CF gear and it will crack. I put the wheels on and established where the collars should be located and then used my Dremel tool to flatten a small area on the axel for the collar set screws to land. Don't forget to use blue locktite on these set screws when you have established the final locations. Slide the wheel pant on the axel and drill out the bolt locations from the inside and then make the holes large enough for the blind nuts. Epoxy the blind nuts in place, install the wheels, and then finish mounting the wheel pants. The horizontal stabs and elevators have already been hinged at the factory so we can eliminate that step. Whoopee! Additionally, the control horns on the elevators have already been installed. Iron down all the UltraCote and finish sealing with the heat gun. I removed the covering at the slot for the servo control arm with the soldering iron. Using a small hand drill with a 1/16" bit, drill out the holes for the servo mounting screws. This will make them easier to put in. A piece of string was threaded through servo mount and exited to back out. Tie the servo control wire to the string and pull the servo into place. I pre-mounted my SWB servo arms on the Hitec HS-5955TG servo before installing the servo in the cavity. I'm not going to use the manufacturer supplied servo arms for this installation because they can slip on the plastic horns under extreme maneuvering. When you have your linkages installed, slide in CF Stab tube into the fuselage, connect your servo extension wires, and bolt the stab/elevator assembly to the fuse using the supplied socket head screws.
The wings have been pre-hinged at the factory but the control horns have not been installed. I'll take my pencil point soldering iron and remove the covering at the control horn slots and the servo bays. Insert the control horns in the slots and cut out the UltraCote around the retainers. Rough up the control horn surfaces with a piece of 100 grit sandpaper where they will be glued. Then, using 30 minute epoxy, glue in the control horns. I'm not going to use the supplied servo arms here and I'll use SWB servo arms for this application. The push rods are then adjusted to size and I like to place a piece of carbon fiber tubing over the bare push rod from link to link to give it strength and to prevent any buckling that may occur as these rods are threaded all the way. Adjust and connect the pushrods using the supplied ball links and hardware. Also, don't forget to secure your servo extensions. I like to secure mine using heat shrink tubing.
Oh geeze! Almost forgot one other nicety that you might to have to deal with. The supplied CF wing tube is ill fitting and will have to be sanded down to insert easily into the pockets on the wings. A little better QA before shipment might have eliminated this task. The one supplied with mine was very tight and would not slide in the wing pockets at all until I spent about 2 hours sanding on it. Strike Four!
