Hangar 9 P-47 Thunderbolt ARF
Build Review by Rockin' Rick Part 2 The fuel tank is installed in the above left photo with the plumbing lines run to the right side of the fuse. The cowling cut outs for the exhaust system will be dependent upon the type of engine that you employ. I've cut an ample size air exit for the 35 GT2 engine on the bottom of the cowling. Far right, we are installing the tail wheel assembly. I think that this is an area that should be re-engineered because the the mechanism, if installed as per the instructions, causes a bit of binding on the push rod for the rudder. Perhaps Hangar 9 will address this issue in future builds of this model. I'm just about done with the fuse for now so let's move on to the wing installations. The wings have been removed from the packaging and the first thing we want to do is iron down all the covering. This will help to insure that no nasty "peel backs" occur during flight. I used a 1/16" drill bit to drill the control surfaces and the wing where the CA hinges will be centered and installed. I really, really, don't like this kind of hinge. I think that for what Hangar 9 charges the consumer for this model, a better hinge system could have been provided. That's what I get for thinking, oh well. I'm preparing to install the flaps and have taped off the area where the pin hinges will be epoxied into place. Use some Vaseline on the hinge points to prevent the glue from entering the hinge. The servo mounting blocks are glued into place and servos for the flaps and the ailerons are installed next. I used Hitec HS 5645MG servos for the ailerons and Hitec 645 MG servos for the flaps. I don't particularly like the way that the manufacturer suggests installing the push rods for the model at all, so I'll cut to size and thread one the ends of the push rods for Sullivan 4-40 clevises that I trust a whole lot more than the suggested connection method in the manual. All of the supplied push rods are threaded on one end as supplied from the factory. The flap linkages were a bit tricky to install, but if you follow the manual and build them to the suggested length you'll have a fairly easy installation here. I've temporarily fitted the retract assembly in the next frame and we'll get to work on them next.
