Build Review by "Rockin' Rick"

Part 1

Welcome back! The Aeroworks 100CC YAK's all done now and I want to put the finishing touches on it.  I can't think of any better way than to add a Virtual Cockpit and a Lite Pilot.  Both of these components are extremely light weight, but they add so much more to the scale realism of your model. I found the whole set up very easy to build and once you finish up the first one, you're going to want to put these in all your planes.  I get so many compliments from other modelers about the cockpits when I visit other fields. And don't forget, for those great graphics, visit with Dennis Kirby of Kirby's Kustom Vinyl Graphics. He's the best in my book and he get's your order out at warp speed.

In this article, I'll be reviewing the Virtual Cockpit and Lite Pilot build for an Aeroworks 100CC YAK 54 QB series. It was a cinch to install as you'll soon find out.

The first step was to cut out all the parts from the supplied photo laminated sheets from the cockpit kit. I chose the yellow cockpit kit and yellow 38-42% "Bob" Lite Pilot because it stands out under the tinted canopy. All the parts were gathered and weighed on the scale.  Check it for yourself. On a plane of this size, that weight is negligible.  It's like adding one of those 4800mah Li-Po batteries.

Using a piece of 3/16" thick foam board that I got from Staples, I traced the front an rear dash panels to it and cut them out. Then 3M Super 77 spray adhesive was used to mate the dash panels to the foam board. After the panels are dry, glue the top dash panel to the forward and rear panel using a hot glue gun.  This, I've found, works best to ensure a good fit and easy clean up.

Pre-fit all of your cut out parts inside the canopy to ensure accuracy.  My kit didn't need any trimming except for a minor trim on the pilots seat back.  Kregg's really on the ball with this kit. Fit the Lite pilot in the canopy and mark out where you want to position it on the canopy floor.  When you are satisfied that all the parts fit nicely, remove the floor and turn it over.  Locate and position the pilots dash and trace around its perimeter. Then mark the section to be cut out of the floor 3/16" inward from your traced outside perimeter. Cut out the canopy floor.
