ARF Build Review-

Aeroworks 150cc YAK 54 QB

Review by "Rockin' Rick"

Part 4

Forgive me if this build review seems a lot like the Aeroworks 100CC YAK 54 that I have previously done.  Both these are very similar with the only apparent difference being the size of the aircraft. The first pix shows the installation of the 2600mah Li-Ion battery and regulator for the engine ignition. Sorry I didn't get that one in sooner.  We're ready to balance the plane now.  The MFGR suggests that an initial distance of 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 " be used for the first few flights.  I'll give a more comprehensive flight report after we make a few flights.  C'ya on the next one.

Flight Report

The initial maiden flight was delayed due to a glitch with the Futaba 2.4ghz Fasst system that has been since resolved.  The radio gear is working fine now and we put the first flight on it on June 10th.  The big DA-150 flew the plane with authority and it exhibited very few bad characteristics in flight.  With the CG set at the manufacturer's suggested starting point, a couple of clicks of UP elevator and two clicks of Right aileron was all that was necessary to achieve stable level flight.  Nice.

After trimming was completed we did some loops, split S's, Immelmans, Hammerheads, inverted passes, and stalls to see how the plane would react and it appears that the initial balancing is just a tad nose heavy. On the stalls, it pitched over nicely to the nose and did not pitch to the wings.  That's alright for now and we'll readjust that later for a more 3D responsive attitude. I landed the plane and it was a little on the hot side to land the first time due to a higher than normal idle speed.  All went well though, and we refueled it to fly again.

On the second flight I went straight through the IMAC Sportsman routine and this plane will perform IMAC maneuvers just fine. Most were done well on low rates with an occasional flip up to medium rates (love that Futaba 12Z radio) to provide better rotation.  I put it on knife edge both ways and found that a  little mixing with about 5% up elevator and 4% left and right aileron respectively made a beautiful straight pass from both ends of the field on low rates.
