ARF Build Review-

Aeroworks 150cc YAK 54 QB

Review by "Rockin' Rick"

Part 3

I did not use the supplied axles with the landing gear.  I now prefer using the PSP Titanium axles after the problems I encountered with the supplied axels on the 42% Dietrich Extra 260.  One of the axles fell out of its mount while the plane was in flight. The housing was still bolted to the landing gear, the axle rod slid out of the housing. Crappy hardware supplied by the manufacturer to say the least.  This made for a much trickier landing with only one main wheel to land the plane. The Smart-Fly 14mz power expander was used with the Smart-Fly Turbo regulator.   A Sullivan smoke pump is used for the smoke system.   I like the Sullivan pump a lot because it is proportional.

I have just adopted the Futaba Fasst 2.4ghz system for my transmitter and receiver.  Nice to know that there is no way that one of my aircraft can get shot down by some idiot who fires up his receiver without thinking and checking for the pin.  I've been a victim of this type of circumstance before and it wasn't pretty.   The perpetrator never admits fault nor compensates your loss for his ignorant mistake. 'Nuff said.  Let's seal the stab and elevator surfaces now with the heating iron.  I only use one servo for the elevators as the Hitec 5955TG provides enough torque to get the job done nicely.  Seal off the other servo bay with the supplied extra UltraCote.  2" SWB servo arms and CF push rods were used in this area also.  I'll get maximum throw for 3D with this combination.

Man, this build has gone along really quickly. Lets get on with the wings now.  Seal all the surfaces with your iron and then tighten them up with your heat gun.   Don't forget to put the supplied clear covering in the joints at the Ailerons.  Drill out the pre-marked positions for the control horn screws and put some of Frank Tiano's OK thin CA in the holes to harden them for the control horn screws.

Drill out the holes for the servos and harden them with some thin CA.  Install the servos in the bays.  I suggest sealing the unused middle servo bay with UltraCote to prevent air from entering the wing cavity.  I used 2ea. Hitec 5955TG servos in each wing at the innermost and outer bays.  Place the finished wing in your soft stand when all the linkages and wiring is completed. I then adjust the throws for maximum ATV.  I've got about 6 inches up and down for the first settings.  Do the same procedure for the elevators and then install them on the plane.  You can tame these wild throws down a bit by setting your rates up in the transmitter for the first flights.
