ARF Build Review- Aeroworks 100cc YAK 54 QB Distributed by Aeroworks Review by "Rockin' Rick"
Part 2
Lets get on to the rudder installation. I like to seal the edges where I know the epoxy glue will be hard to get off later with blue painters tape. The Robart style hinges were glued to the vertical stab first and then the rudder was installed. Vaseline or two cycle engine oil is a good to use on your hinge points to prevent any glue from adhering to your hinges. When the epoxy dries, all you have to do is peel away the tape and any glue that was squeezed out of the hinge pockets will be on the tape and not on your model. The servo extension arms were installed and the cabling attached to the rear arm. I didn't use the supplied cable or the crimps. I like Nelson cable and Air Wild's cable connectors. Note that one of the rear ball links is installed above the servo arm and the one on the other side installed below. This prevents the cable from rubbing against itself where it crosses in the fuse. I think that this cuts down on the possibility of interference. Haven't had a bit of trouble with interference yet using this technique.
The cabling was attached to the rudder control horns on the middle hole on the control horn. Kinda worked best here. Using the supplied template, the DA 100 was then mounted to the engine box with 6mm socket head bolts and lock nuts on the inside. These are not included in the kit. Be sure to use red locktite on the threads. 5 of the supplied 1/4" spacers were used on each mounting bolt to achieve the recommended 7 3/4" dimensioning from the firewall to the prop hub. The throttle servo and pushrod were installed. A Hitec HS-5475HB servo was employed for the throttle. I used one of these on the Xtreme Composite Edge 540 and it performs well on the throttle I really didn't like the way that the manual suggested mounting the ignition module so I decided to mount the module, battery and voltage regulator all on a platform inside the engine box.
I found a piece of scrap plywood and cut it out to fit inside the engine box on a couple of 1/4" balsa rails glued to the inside of the engine box. A Smart Fly heavy duty regulator and a Fromeco 2400mah Peerless battery flank the DA 100 ignition module along with a Fromeco Badger switch. When securing the voltage regulator be sure to allow the heat sink to be exposed for cooling. The components fit nicely tucked up inside the engine box and secured with Velcro strapping to the platform. All the components were fitted with Deans connectors for ultimate connection reliability and then secured with heat shrink tubing. This build is really going good, let's get on to the next step.
