The Don Lowe Masters Reporter-Rick Whitely October 6, 2006 Part 2 Taking a look down through the pits area and runway should give you some idea of the great flying conditions at this aerodrome. Pat Harness also uses this runway for his full scale planes. Plenty of vendors were also at the event to help the folks with their flying needs. Quique's YAK 54 is caught while in the competition as David Moser takes his aircraft to the ready area. Can you believe it? David is only 16 and is already competing in the Masters! The air was charged with excitement and expectation as the pilots made their way to the ready area to start in the competition. Quique Somenzini waits for his turn while his caller reviews a maneuver with him. Sebastiano Silvestri waits at ready while Quique prepares to take off. He's in the middle of the pix. Chip Hyde holds Bill Hemple's plane in the ready to start position as Bill checks out another pilot's maneuvers. Chip called for Bill on this day. These guys are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet on or off the field. John Glezellis and his caller catch their breath before starting the next round. At about 3:00 PM, the sequence flying was done for the day and everyone was "more than ready" to have the day's freestyle competition start. I mean, that's what we came for, didn't we? To me, there just isn't a whole lot of entertainment in watching the pilots all do the same sequences. Freestyle should also count more than 10% of the scoring. I think it out to go 33% freestyle, 33% knowns, 34% unknowns. Jason Shulman is obviously very happy about his performance as Mark Leseberg waves to the crowd. The Dalton Aviation 260 that was raffled off is in the next pix. What a generous donation from Tony Russo to help raise funds for the Don Lowe Masters and what a super prize that would be for some lucky winner! A fellow named "Bob" won the aircraft. His last name was not released. It was Ready To Fly, with everything already built and installed. Quique seems delighted with himself because knows he's put on another spectacular performance. Marco Benincasa posed for our camera with his aircraft. He's really a super nice guy and gave me a couple of flying tips that I'm going to try out soon. Andrew "The Animal" Jesky just completes his freestyle routine. If you ever get a chance to see him perform, you'll know why the call him "The Animal". What a flyer! I had a chance to catch up with two old friends, Quique Somenzini and Wayne Ulery. Really nice guys who always take time out of their busy schedules for me. Chip Hyde...geeze ,I hadn't seen him since the 2004 Masters. As I walked up to greet him, before I could say anything he said, " Hey Rick, how's it goin' man?". Really threw me for a loop that he'd remember me. This guy has won just about every major competition that you can think of, and is a flying institution in himself. I hope to see him again in Tucson for the Shoot-Out in a couple of weeks. Check out the videos in our "Pro Video" Section |
