Wings over Charleston Air Show Charleston Air Force Base

4-26-08

In what was to be one of the biggest events ever in Charleston, SC,  the "Wings Over Charleston" air show commenced at 10:00 AM on April 26, 2008.  Three years have came and gone since an airshow has been held in Charleston.  This one made up for time lost in many ways.  A crowd estimated to be well  over 100,000 people gathered at the United States Air Force's base in Charleston that is home to the 437th Military Airlift Command.  The Carolina Skydancers were on hand to show off our stuff at this event and enjoy the show put on by some of the best flyers in the world.  Headlining the show was the US Air Force's Thunderbirds aerobatic show team.

Period aircraft from the second world war up to the present day were on hand to show off for the crowd with a special performance by aerobatic star, Patty Wagstaff.  Patty's flying a new color scheme Extra 300 with a highly improved Thunderbolt engine producing well over 330 HP.

This Pitts Vortex was also a great performer who really turned the crowd on with a barrage of smoke and great maneuvers.  This pilot was a last minute substitute for a performer who couldn't make the show and we never did get his name.  His flying was awesome.

The Carolina Skydancers and RC flyers from other regional clubs got to fly early in the morning before the full scale show began for only about 45 minutes up until 10:00 AM.  Here's a shot of our RC Aircraft (Carolina Skydancers) on display at the show.

After it's all said and done, you just can't beat an airshow put on by the US Air Force.  If you ever want to know what freedoms looks and sounds like, go to a show at your local US Air Force Base.  And while you're there, let the folks in uniform know how much you appreciate the sacrifices they make to keep you free and enjoying the best lifestyle on earth.
